The Good, The Bad, The Ridiculously Thin!

I found this video on youtube of LG's new 31 in TV.

Since I love videogames, I am always interested to see the new technology for displays.

What I found so amazing about this tv is how crisp the display is. It was so good, it made Garfield look funny! On a more serious note though, I was most shocked by how thin the tv itself actually is in comparison to the quality of the picture. I own a tube tv that ways over 100lbs, but this tv looks like it could way less then 20.

I do see some major benefits of this tv. For one, the stand to hang it on would not need to be amazingly tough or sturdy. The other great benefit is the ease to move the tv around your home.

At the same time, that could be a major disadvantage. It would be a lot easier to steal a 20lb tv then a 100lb one.

I do like how quickly tv sizes are changing. It was only a few years ago that the HDTVs left the tube style, but now the ones we see are going to look really thick and bulky. It's just amazing all in all.

REAL TRANSFORMERS!

What I found at this link below is a real working transformer. It starts off looking like a "simple" remote controlled car, then transforms into a robot and starts walking. The best part is that the transformation from car to bot and back is all automated. There is no need for human interaction beyond the remote control.

The best benefit of this is the possibilities from it. Imagine a bike that can transform into a simple, small briefcase. Cars that can easily transform from a truck to sports car. Maybe even an iron man style suit. It is possible that soldiers could have a mechanized suit that could transform into other variations. This could further protect them and help them get home safely.

I know what I am saying is a rather large jump, but as the same time, I can see it happening.

Computer + Credit Card = Awesome!

I found a video that showed some of the newest credit card technology and I am really excited.

There were two kinds of card prototypes shown. The first one was multiple cards in one. It featured two separate cards, which isn't very impressive, since we can use that with the one card on campus. What makes is so amazing is that they used only one magnetic strip. It is actually fully programmable and contains all of the data needed to program the strip to either account. All the user has to do is push a button and pick which card they want.

To make it even more impressive, the cards are just as thin as a normal card, just as flexible, scratch resistant and water proof. I would love to have fewer cards in my wallet, while still being able to not worry about losing my card to breaking or water damage.

The second card is actually password protected. Until you input the password, the card cannot be used. If you were to accidentally drop your card somewhere, it is much less likely someone will pick up the card and use it. It also hides the numbers on the front until the password is put in. The numbers then come up on the display, so a lost card won't be used for online purchases either.

I think this technology is really amazing and I am hoping that my bank will start carrying these cards in the coming year or two.

Translator? Theres an app for that

I found this smart phone application that really blew me away. It would live stream and translation for whatever image you put in front of it. A perfect example of this would be a sign that says "danger: asbestos!" and it happens to be in Russian. We may not be able to read it, but our phone can.

The reason I am so excited for this technology because of the possibilities. When a person goes travelling, he/ she will be able to read menus, signs, books, etc, without the worry of paying for a translator.

Let's say I had an allergen to peanuts and while travelling in France, I accidentally ate a food cooked in peanut oil. If I had this translator, I could of read that it is roasted duck in peanut oil and saved myself an allergy attack.

The video I found shows this application in action and I am hoping that as phones get more advanced, so will this technology.

What I'm using for wallpaper

When I saw this article, I was very excited. Imagine speakers that are less than .25mm thick.

What make it more impressive, the speakers are FLEXIBLE. The writer discusses the uses within cars and homes. I personally would really like the ability to create a better sound system that is out of sight.

Surround sound systems to be surround, but without a single being one of the that can be seen. Even better, car speakers could be placed along the top of the car, rather then built into the doors, while still sounding clear.

A larger scale use of these speakers is for P.A. systems in airports. Rather then a speaker combating all of the background noise, the walls will let customers hear the announcement clearly.

More then anything, I thought that it is a revolutionary idea for speakers.

Beyond the LapTop

I don't know about anyone else, but if I had the choice between a screen or no screen, I choose the latter. Now, what I mean is having a projector instead of an LED. Of course, the main reasoning behind this is the versatility of the projector.

Now, think of a projector meets computer. Rather then needing to have a laptop, you would have a drive with a built in projector. With the minds in Light Blue Optics, this idea is taking form.

What I found is the Light Touch Projector that projects an image on the table in front of the user. Now the user can interact with the image in the same way you woud with a touch screen computer. To make matters more impressive, the Light Touch can connect to social networks. It comes with 2 Gb of flash memory and micro sd slot to expand it even more. Though the Light Touch is slightly bulky, I can very easily see future versions to be much smaller and more powerful.

The ability to turn any surface into a computer screen and keyboard would be an amazing idea. I would hope it could even go to the point of a necklace or something you wear that can project on anything in front of you. We could access the internet on the go, watch movies, record videos, and most anything else a computer can do now of days. Think of it, being able to have a presentation without the need of a separate computer, just let your future Light Touch show it for you.

The "keyboard" I want!

This isn't a revolutionary technology in the way we normally think of it, but I wanted to still show what I found. Think of a keyboard without any keys. It is one touch screen, similar to the keyboards on many touch smart phones. From this, we could use the keyboard to preview videos or emails. Even more, there is a near unlimited amount of customization that we could do for the "keyboard."

I feel like we are making leaps and bounds to the kinds of computers we used to only see in sci-fi movies.

The uber washer!

I found this design for a new style washing machine that can actually help save water and energy during loads. How it does this is a two drum design. In the back drum, the owner can wash heavier clothes such as jeans or blankets. While in the front drum, the owner can wash delicates or white clothes. This effectively means that you can do two loads at the same time, using the same water. Rather then worrying about mixing white shirts with red ones, the person can combine then in the two separate drums.

I really like this idea because it helps with energy saving methods. This will reduce the cost for everyone and in our economic times, that is important. Beyond that, there is the fact that we don't have to wait for a full load of delicates or a full load of regular clothing.

A Revolutionary Phone Concept

I found this new phone concept that I thought was amazing. What makes it so interesting is that it uses the E-ink found in the Kindle. With its extremely low battery use, energy save mode will bring on a whole new meaning. The article also discusses a way for the E-ink to slowly dim as a way to show how low the battery is getting.

When the phone is in use, it will use the normal back lit display, or the E-ink to conserve battery life.

With how fast smart phones use up battery life, I like the idea of making the display use less energy.

Certain smart phones, such as the Evo, are notorious for last 4-5 hours before needing another charge. Unless you have a charger with you at all times, this would serve as a major problem.

I know I have days where I am at school for longer then 5 hours. If I have a phone that cant even make it a whole day, I could be stuck without a phone.

The one major drawback of the E-ink is that it is only in black and white. They haven't yet been able to create a color E-ink, but when that happens, I believe there will be a new generation of electronic displays. From cell phones to computers, they will all be needing less and less power to function optimally. This would make the batteries we have today become more then needed and lasting days at a time on one charge.

WIND BELTS!

I found this video article while stumbling and was interested by the title alone. It talks about the newest advancement towards energy generators.

In the beginning of the video, the generator is shown powering an led light by a fan. Rather then being a turbine, it waves and creates electricity.

The largest benefit of the wind belt is that it is relatively easy to make. The belt is made of a material used in making kites.

It is important to our society because rather then everyone focusing on shrinking down the turbine, we can use these belts and create a more efficient energy source.

Imagine having the belts set up on the top of buildings. As the wind will blow through the belt, electricity will be generated. It may not power an entire building, but there is still power being supplied. Another idea is using it with transportation. Most of us have put our arms out of the window of a moving car and felt the wind rushing by. Now, imagine a small belt in the grill of a car, or on the roof, or even a spoiler. It should be able to help provide energy to the car while it is moving.

Blacker then the Blackest Black Paint!

I found this article stumbling and I thought it was a strange idea. Why would NASA want to create a "darker" black material. The current paint that is used in the cameras is Z306, but the paint doesn't absorb enough of the light.  This means that the pictures that require a high definition become unusable. There is a great example of this happening in the article.

The new material is carbon nanotubes and absorbs 99.5% of the light that enters the tiny gaps. This means that light pollution is near eliminated.

This is important for space exploration for several reasons. One is the fact that more detailed pictures of galaxies and planets means better ways to map them. If I were to pick between a picture that has a lot of light blurring or more detailed, I would near aways pick the second one. Even more then that, if we send satellites to explore the outer regions of our solar system and further. Better details can also help scientists discover more about dark matter in our universe.

Brain Booster

I found an article discussing the possibility of a new drug that allows the user to have a photographic memory.

Scientists have stumbled upon this possibility while they were studying a region of the visual cortex. They found if the RGS-14 protein is boosted in mice, the mice could better remember objects they have seen.

Imagine if scientists could perfect this protein boosting. We could further unlock the full potential of the human mind. We could look at a map and then remember every street on it. We could look at a blue print and remember what goes where.

The one issue that I am seeing is whether or not we would be able to look at the page of a book and remember everything perfectly or just remember what the page looks like.

The one major known is that there is some major potential coming from this protein discovery.

I found this video while stumbling and I thought it was a rather interesting achievement.

The group use more "aggressive" tricks to get the helicopter through surprising obstacles. What would make this more impressive is if these tricks could be used on a larger scale.

After you watch this video, imagine a full size Quadrotor using these maneuvers to get through any sticky situations.

Beyond that, air shows would become a whole other league too. I really enjoyed this video, let me know if you do too!


Blue Tooth Watches

I found an article discussing Casio's plans to create blue tooth watches for android phones. These watches will connect to the phone for several features.

The most exciting one is that the watch will actually serve as a caller I.D. as well as a watch. If we are in classes and get a call, we could look at our watch to see who is calling. This also works with emails and text messages.

Another feature that will be beneficial is the "find my phone" feature where it will make your phone buzz.

The one draw back of this is that it only works within 5 meters.

Further details, such as music and sound control are still in the works.
Sadly, we have not heard more specific details on when it will be released.
